Hun Diwali Celebration ’23

Hun is full of students with different cultures and identities. One of the ways Hun celebrates its diversity is by having different cultural clubs like the Greek Club, Black Student Union, and the Masala Club. The Masala club’s goal is to celebrate South Asian culture by educating others about various celebrations and customs that South Asian culture holds in particular. An example of this is the Diwali party that The Masala club hosted on Friday November 10th. Diwali is a South Asian celebration of good versus evil and is celebrated by lighting fireworks and Diyas. Although many of the stories behind Diwali vary, it is said that Diwali originated from the Story of Rama and Sita, a tale about a good king who was exiled for 16 years to the forest. During this exile, he fought the evil demon king Ravana and won. After this, Rama and Sita were welcomed with diyas, an Indian oil lamp which led all the way to their palace. Since then, Diwali has been celebrated by families all over South Asia with the lighting of Diyas leading to their home. Here at Hun, the Masala club celebrated Diwali by hosting a Diwali party in Global. The Masala club’s main goal was to celebrate Diwali alongside Hun students and educate everyone about what Diwali is and what the holiday signifies in South Asian culture.
