‘Tis the season! Gingerbread cookies are an iconic dessert during the holidays. With the perfect texture and the best combination of spices, there’s a good reason gingerbread cookies are a holiday favorite. This simple and easy-to-follow guide will help you make those delicious gingerbread cookies!
- 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 2 Tsp Cinnamon
- ¼ Tsp Nutmeg
- ¼ Tsp Allspice
- 2 Tsp Ground Ginger
- ½ Tsp Baking Powder
- 1 Tsp Baking Soda
- 1 Tsp Salt
- ½ Cup Butter
- ¾ Cup Molasses
- ½ Cup Brown Sugar
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 Egg
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ground ginger, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
In a large saucepan on low heat, mix together butter, molasses, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
Turn off the heat, then gradually add the dry mixture into the saucepan until a dough is formed. (Add more flour if the dough is too sticky)
Wrap dough with plastic wrap then chill for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Sprinkle flour on your working surface if the dough is sticking too much.
Using cookie cutters (or you can use a knife), cut out shapes from the dough. If you are using cookie cutters, press down evenly and give them a little shake to get clean edges.
Transfer the gingerbread shapes onto a baking sheet pan lined with parchment paper to prevent the dough from sticking. Preheat the oven then bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes.
Cool cookies for about 5 minutes then decorate with icing. Decorating gingerbread cookies is a fun activity to enjoy with family and friends!
