Where in the World are All-Virtual Students Now?

Remote-schooling means that we miss more and more things happening in each other’s lives. What are students doing when they are not “in class”? What fun do they have, and what do they miss the most about Hun?

Let’s see what Eilah Wahlin ‘21, Amanda Jenkins ‘21, Anna Marie Heiser ‘21, and Kevin Luo ‘21 say about their life at home.

Eilah Wahlin ‘21, Brooklyn, New York City.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the last few months?

Making my own candles, going to acupuncture to help my neck and back with pain, cooking! I specifically have made lasagna and sushi, which was really great.

What’s your favorite place to go in your area? Why?

A ramen place called Ramen Danbo, where they have outside dining on the side of the street. My aunt and I usually go there once a week to support and get authentic Japanese ramen.

What’s changed the most about you since you’ve left Hun?

Since I left Hun, I think I have been able to become comfortable with myself without any societal or school pressures. I have learned a lot about myself and became increasingly self-aware. Being away from everybody for a year has also taught me how to live on my own, how to smartly occupy my time, how to study and get all of my work done without study hall, and how to cook.

What’s your favorite meal and place to eat while at home?

Tacos :)! Not only is it quick to prepare, but it is also delicious. Or, ordering chipotle :). We also do not have a dining room, so we sit on the couch and eat together every night.

What do you miss the most about Hun?

I 100% miss being in the dorm and all of my teachers the most at Hun. I miss the loudness and excited-ness we had in Carter as a dorm. I also miss always being surrounded by friends, since being an only child at home is very lonely. Also, I wish I could see and bond with all of my new teachers this year in person.

Amanda Jenkins ‘21, Iselin, New Jersey.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the last few months?

My siblings and I went snowboarding for the first time! I also went to New York City to tour Columbia and the surrounding area with some friends and family.

What’s your favorite place to go in your area? Why?

I love going to Merrill Park or to my local track to run and exercise in the open space. I also love playing golf and have been training indoors and volunteering with juniors at my local golf course.

What’s changed the most about you since you’ve left Hun?

Since I’ve left Hun, I have definitely learned how to develop healthy habits while learning virtually from home. Whether it is spending time away from the screen or going on a jog, I have been able to manage my time in ways that are beneficial to my mental and physical health.

What’s your favorite meal and place to eat while at home?

Chicken biryani and butter naan. My household absolutely loves all types of Indian food and spices.

What do you miss the most about Hun?

I definitely miss being in the dorms with my fellow boarders and participating in boarding trips and activities on weekends.

Anna Marie Heiser ‘21, Canton, Ohio.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the last few months?

Going to a coffee shop called The 27 club, in Cleveland Ohio. The coffee shop was designed and opened by the music artist, Machine Gun Kelly, who is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. Great coffee with pink milk and fun atmosphere.

What’s your favorite place to go in your area? Why?

Ming’s bubble tea, about 45 minutes away in Kent, Ohio. It has great tea and a fun consignment shop next door!

Anna Marie and her childhood Friend doing a late night bubble tea trip to Mings.

What’s changed the most about you since you’ve left Hun?

The most that has changed about me is how laidback I am. Before Covid I used to fret and want everything to go perfectly all the time. With the pandemic, I have learned to just go with the flow and embrace mistakes along the way.

What’s your favorite meal and place to eat while at home?

My favorite meal to eat at home is a self-made smoothie bowl. I use protein powder, almond milk, bananas, strawberries, and coconut. My favorite place to eat nearby is Cilantro, an authentic Thai restaurant with a good pad Thai dish!

What do you miss the most about Hun?

I honestly miss the people and atmosphere at Hun. There was always a hustle between academics and extra-curriculars. I loved coming back from practice late at night and still seeing people studying in Global or in Carter dorm catching a conversation in the kitchen. I miss it a lot. At the beginning of quarantine, I felt homesick being away from Hun. It really was home to me.

Tremont Coffee, Anna Marie’s favorite coffee shop in Massillon Ohio.

Kevin Luo ‘21, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the last few months?

I enjoyed reading Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, and I will definitely be recommending this book to others.

What’s your favorite place to go in your area? Why?

My uncle’s a germaphobe, so I have been living under very strict, and rather peculiar rules. It’s not fun by any means so I spent most of my time in my room.

What’s changed the most about you since you’ve left Hun?

Living in the dorms and being with my friends all day. I was really used to the fast-paced and busy lifestyle at Hun. However, now I’ve learned to spend time with myself in a rather isolated environment.

What’s your favorite meal and place to eat while at home?

I’m not at home, but if I were, it would be Rice Roll. A traditional dish in Cantonese Cuisine.

What do you miss the most about Hun?

The people for sure. It’s only after I left Hun that I realized how much my friends and the faculties played a role in my life and how much I miss talking to them and participating in activities.
